Rugby: Gareth Thomas linked with a return to rugby union

Thomas skippers the Welsh rugby league team against France this afternoon amid reports he could be joining London Scottish.

Thomas moved into the 13-man game with the Wrexham-based Crusaders in March and will be keen to help Wales beat the French today.

However, he could be following in the footsteps of big mate Andy Powell, who is at London Wasps.

Asked about reports linking them with Alfie, London Welsh chief executive John Taylor said: “We do not have the budget or the need in our current squad for another wing or full-back.

London Scottish chief executive Tony Copsey, the former Wales lock, said: “We would like to have him but he is thinking over his options.”

Wales will take their place among rugby league’s elite if they can overcome France in Albi to win the Alitalia European Cup this afternoon.

The winner will qualify for the 2011 Four Nations tournament and take on England, Australia and New Zealand.

But Wales’ bid has been hit by the absence of skipper Lee Briers, who has a knee injury.

Coach Iestyn Harris said: “Gareth Thomas is going to be captain. Lee has had a knee injury all week, which we’d hoped he’d recover from.

“I don’t think Gareth’s leadership qualities have ever been in question.

“His leadership qualities for the group will be key for us and he’s excited by the challenge and he’s looking forward to it.”

Wilkinson tips Cipriani for 'huge' England future

Jonny Wilkinson believes that Melbourne Rebels-bound fly-half Danny Cipriani has a 'huge, huge future' with England.

Cipriani has not played a Test since November 2008 and has turned his back on a possible England comeback to pit his wits against the best the southern hemisphere has to offer in next season's inaugural Super Rugby campaign.

Nevertheless, Wilkinson, who took his own leap of faith by joining Top 14 side Toulon in 2009, has pegged his erstwhile team-mate as a star of England's future. Martin Johnson omitted Cipriani from both the Elite Player Squad and Saxons squad in July because the Super season coincides with the 2011 Six Nations - placing any chance of a World Cup call in serious doubt.

"Danny has a huge, huge future," Wilkinson told The Daily Telegraph. "This may be an experience that is going to give him an even bigger impact when it does come about.

"The important thing is what he does is right for him and that his next step is a move forward. If he is in control of the move and able to influence it, then it will be a big, big step.

"Danny will go out there and search for his best. That is what I am trying to do out here [in Toulon]. When you go after it you start looking for the little added differences. It is an exciting prospect. If Danny is on form, then people need to benefit from it."

Cipriani's move to the Rebels will see him paired with former Wallabies boss Rod Macqueen, who was angered last week by the former Wasps star's failure to attend a pre-season meet due to visa issues.

England competes annually in the Six Nations Championship, which is played against five other European nations: France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland, and Wales. The Six Nations started out as the Home Nations Championship in 1883 which England won with a Triple Crown.

England has won the title more times than any other nation by winning it outright 25 times, and sharing victory ten times. Their longest wait between championships was 18 years from 1892 to 1910.

England players traditionally wear white shorts, navy socks with white tops, and a white shirt with a red rose embroidered on it, and for the first time in the English rugby team's history, their away shirt is red. Their home ground is Twickenham Stadium where they first played in 1910. The team is administered by the Rugby Football Union (RFU).

Scottish Rugby Union is the governing body of rugby union in Scotland. It is the second oldest Rugby Union, being founded in 1873.

Scottish Football Union was founded on Monday 3rd March 1873 at a meeting held at Glasgow Academy, Elmbank Stret, Glasgow. The SFU was a founding member of the International Rugby Board in 1886 with Ireland and Wales.

In 1924 the SFU changed its name to become the Scottish Rugby Union. International games were played at Inverleith from 1899 to 1925 when Murrayfield was opened.
